For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship). Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study International Chinese Language Education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges (“host institutions”).

Tianjin University (TJU), as one of the host institutions, welcomes applicants all over the world to study at TJU.

I.  Category & Eligibility

All applicants shall be:

a) non-Chinese citizens;

b) in good physical and mental conditions, and with good academic performance and conduct;

c) committed to the Chinese language education and related work;

d) between the ages of 18 and 35 (as of 1st September, 2022). Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45.

1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

This program provides sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicant shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 5) as well as a minimum score of 60 on HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

2. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

This program provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. Applicants who have enjoyed similar scholarships will not be admitted.

2.1 Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL): Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on HSK Test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

2.2 Chinese Language & Literature: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK Test (Level 4) and a minimum score of 60 on HSKK Test (Intermediate Level).

2.3 Chinese Language: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on HSK Test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

3. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students

This program provides sponsorship of a maximum of 5 months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

3.1 Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL): Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK Test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

3.2 Chinese Language & Literature, Chinese History:  Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3) and should submit an HSKK test score is required.

3.3 Tai Chi CultureAn HSK test score is required. Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

4. Scholarship for Four-Week Study

This program provides scholarship for 4 weeks. Applicants shall submit an HSK score report. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

4.1 Scholarship for Four-Week Study: The program provides Chinese language & culture course to student group (10 to 15 students) which is organized by a recommending institution. The recommending institution should contact with TJU to negotiate the study plan, and apply to CLEC for approval.  

II.  Scholarship Coverage and Standard

The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation fee, living allowance (not include Four-week Study students) and comprehensive medical insurance fee. The living allowance is RMB 3,000 per month for MTCSOL students and RMB 2,500 per month for One-Academic-Year Study and One-Semester Study students.

TJU provides free accommodation in Double Room. Applicants who apply to live in Single Room need extra payment.

IV.   Admission Procedure 

1. Applicant can log on to the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn) from 1st March, 2021 to look for Recommending Institutions and Host Institutions, to complete and submit application materials online, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents. The deadline is as follows.

2. Recommending Institutions, TJU and CLEC will verify application materials on line and select outstanding applicants. CLEC will make a comprehensive review and publish the result three months before school registration. Applicants can check the application process, materials review and admission results on line. The scholarship applicants could print their scholarship certificate online.

3. TJU will confirm the admission with the applicants according to the results of the review.

V.  Policies Regarding Currently Employed Chinese Language Teachers and Chinese Bridge Award Recipients

1. Currently employed Chinese language teachers

Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.

2. Chinese Bridge Award Recipients

Applicants who have won the 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to TJU on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. VI.  Application Documents

1.  Scanned copies of the passport photo page;

2.  Score reports of the HSK, HSKK (within two-year validity);

3.  Certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation);

4.  Certificate of an official transcript;

5. Recommendation letter signed by the head of the Recommending Institutions (please provide objective comments on the applicant, including whether the applicant is a student of Confucius Institute or other identity);

6. Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Applicant who is able to provide notarized employment agreement upon graduation has priority of admission;

7. TCSOL teachers shall submit an employment verification letter and a reference letter provided by the institute they work for;

8. Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students are required to provide a study or research plan of no less than 800 words in Chinese (this document should be uploaded to “Referee-Upload Recommendation Letter” together with your recommendation letters as a zip file);

9. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (applicant with a duration of study for more than one year should submit this form). Click to download the template. The form should be filled in Chinese or English. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to have the medical examination as the medical results have 6-month validity.

10. Certificate of Non-Criminal Records.

Note: If the documents are not in Chinese or English version, notarization documents should be provided. Item 9 and 10 should be uploaded to “Basic Information-Upload Passport First Page” together with your scanned copy of passport as a zip file.

VII.   Disclaimer

1. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.

2. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.

3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with TJU on time should inform us about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be canceled.

4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who do not pass the admission physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.
