FOUNDATION PROGRAM

Tianjin University（TJU）is one of the first batch pilot universities to provide foundation program for international undergraduates awarded with Chinese Government Scholarships under the Ministry of Education of China. Since 2005, nearly 2000 international students have studied at and graduated from TJU with solid Chinese language skills, strong adaptability in degree program learning as well as high-level intercultural communication competence. The foundation program at TJU is designed for students who plan to pursue science and engineering for further study,  as the aim of foundation program is to arm students with a systematic study of general Chinese, technical Chinese, mathematics, physics and chemistry to help students proceed to degree programs of various disciplines at TJU or other renowned higher education institutions. At the same time, relying on the advantageous disciplines of Tianjin University, the foundation program is created to combine the characteristics of economics, management and commerce, laying a solid foundation for cultivating professional economic and management-oriented talents, and assisting learners in their future progress in the disciplines of economics, management and commerce.

At present, nearly 200 international students from more than 30 countries supported by Chinese Government Scholarship or at their own expenses are studying foundation program at Tianjin University. For academic year 2025, TJU will continue to provide foundation program study for international students, and the specifics are as follows: 

I. Course Setting

II. Features and Strengths 

1. Small class teaching, with teachers providing more support and attention.

2. The course is rich in content, helping to expand vision and future planning.

3. Applicants who meet the assessment requirements have priority for undergraduate admission and scholarship opportunities.

III. Qualification of Applicants 

1. Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, and the conditions set by the Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met. 

2. Applicants shall be in good physical and mental health and hold a high school diploma.  

3. Applicant should be between 18 and 24 years of age. Applicants who are still under the age of 18 as of September 1st, 2025 must submit the original guardian certificate issued by the Tianjin District Notary Office, and the Guardian must be a permanent resident of Tianjin.   

IV. Program Duration, Application Deadline and Date of Entry 

Note: Due to the limited quota of TJU, early application is strongly advised. 

V. Application Procedure 

Step 1: Register online 

Applicants can visit TJU International Student Service System (ISSS) and register an account to log in and start the application.

Step 2: Submit online application. 

Applicants should fill in the online application with true and accurate information and upload the necessary documents as required. Then applicants can submit application online. 

VI. Application Checklist 

1. Photocopy of passport. 

2. Academic Transcript. 

3. Highest Diploma. (Pre-graduation certificate for applicants who have not obtained the graduation certificate.) 

4. Study Experience Resume: The start and end time of each education experience must be uninterrupted, and education level should start from senior middle school. (Click to download the template)

5. Valid Foreigner Physical Examination Report. Click to download the template. (The medical examinations must cover all the items listed and should be conducted after October, 2024). 

6. Certificate of Non-Criminal Records for one-year program applicants. 

7. HSK 4 Certificate and above, or Chinese Learning Experience Certificate of one-year and more for spring semester applicants. 

8. Visa and Transfer Certificate from present university for applicants who are now in China. 

Note:  

1. All uploaded documents must be in Chinese/English; otherwise notarial translations in Chinese/English are required. Once translated, the original documents and certified translations should be submitted together to the application system.

2. TJU has the right to request the applicants to provide the original or notarized hard copies of application documents for further qualification checks if the uploaded documents are not sufficient. Applicants who provide fake materials will be disqualified from admission. 

VII. Admission 

Applicants can check admission status via International Student Service System (ISSS) after submitting the online application. TJU will issue Admission Notice and visa documents to those admitted. 

VIII. Fees 

1. Application and Tuition Fee ( Pay after admission)

Note: Tuition fees are subject to the Admission Notice of Tianjin University.

2. Medical Insurance: 400 RMB/semester/person; 

3. Students shall be responsible for expenses such as traveling fee, learning materials fee; 

4. Accommodation Fee 

(1) Accommodation:The rates for different types of dormitories on campus range from 15 to 60 RMB/bed/day. For more details, please click the link below ：Accommodation Fees for International Students.docx

(2) Students who choose to live off campus shall register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival at TJU.
