To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Tianjin University (TJU) as one of the host institutions, welcomes all the Recommending Institutions recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese language education and related programs in TJU with the Scholarship.

 

I.  Eligibility

a) Be a non-Chinese citizen;

b) Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of TJU;

c) Be in good physical and mental health, be in good academic and behavioral standing;

d) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;

e) Be aged between 18 and 35 years on September 1, 2024. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who apply for a scholarship for a Bachelor’s degree normally shall be younger than 25.

 

II. Categories and Qualifications

A. Chinese Language Teacher Scholarships

1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

This program provides sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicant shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 5) as well as a minimum score of 60 on HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

2. Scholarship for One-Year Study Program

This program provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. Applicants who had the same scholarship within 3 years will not be admitted.

2.1 International Chinese language education: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

2.2 Chinese Language & Literature: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK test (Level 4) and a minimum score of 60 on HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

2.3 Chinese Language: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

3. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program

This program provides sponsorship of a maximum of 5 months. Applicants who had the same scholarship within 3 years will not be admitted.

3.1 International Chinese language education, Chinese Language & Literature: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

3.2 Taiji CultureAn HSK test score is required. Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

4. Scholarship for Four-Week Study Program

This program provides scholarship for 4 weeks. Applicants shall submit an HSK score report. This program provides Chinese language & culture course to student group (10 to 15 students) which should be organized by a Recommending Institution. The Recommending Institution should contact with TJU to negotiate the study plan in advance, and apply to CLEC for approval.  

B. Joint Program Scholarship

Undergraduate Program of Chinese Language + Cross-border E-commerce

This scholarship is jointly funded by CLEC and TJU, which is provided for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

C. Scholarships for Online Programs

1. The Online Program for One-Year Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Under most circumstances, a score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3) is required, and priority will be given to those who also provide an HSKK test score.

2. The Online Program for One-Semester Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Normally an HSK test score (regardless of level or score) is required.

3. The Special Online Study Program, should be organized by a Recommending Institution in a group. The specific application requirements and information please contact TJU office directly.

 

III. Scholarship Coverage and Standard

The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation fee, living allowance (not include Four-week Study Program) and comprehensive medical insurance fee. The living allowance is RMB 3,000 per month for master’s students in International Chinese Language Education and RMB 2,500 per month for undergraduates, one-year study program students and one-semester study program students.

The scholarship online program only support tuition fees.

TJU provides free accommodation in Double Room. Applicants who apply to live in Single Room need to give extra payment.

V.   Application Procedures 

1. Online registration need to be completed both on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn) and on Tianjin University International Student Service Systemtju.at0086.cn/student).  Application steps are as follows:

For International Chinese Teacher Scholarship Application Website:

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2024 on the website( cis.chinese.cn). Applicant can log on the website to look for Recommending Institutions and choose Tianjin University as the Host Institutions (Apply for Bachelor program of Chinese Language + Cross-border E-commerce, applicants need to tick the box of Joint Program Scholarships), and then complete and submit application materials online, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

For Tianjin University International Student Service System

Log on the website (tju.at0086.cn/student) to register an account, and then complete and submit application materials online, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

2. CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. The results will be published about three months before the program starts.

3. Applicants can check the application process, materials review and admission results on line. The scholarship applicants could print their scholarship certificate online.

4. TJU will confirm the admission with the applicants according to the results of the review.

5. Scholarship winners shall register for admission in accordance with the time, method and procedure specified in the admission notice of TJU.

 

VI. Policies Regarding In-service Chinese Language Teachers and Chinese Bridge Winners

1. In-Service Chinese Language Teachers

Priority will be given to the In-service Chinese language teachers if they provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.

2. Chinese Bridge Winners

Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

VII. Application Materials

A. For all applicants

1. A scanned copy of the passport photo page;

2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK/HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);

3. A reference letter by the head of the Recommending Institution;

4. A certificate of the highest diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript;

5. Certificate of Non-Criminal Records. Usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application; 

6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (applicant with a duration of study for more than one year should submit this form). Click here to download the form. The form should be filled in Chinese or English. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to have the medical examination as the medical results have 6-month validity.

B. For degree program applicants 

7. Applicants of the Scholarship for a Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education are required to provide two reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China.

C. In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer.

Note: If the documents are not in Chinese or English version, notarization documents should be provided. Certificate of Non-Criminal Records and Foreigner Physical Examination Form should be uploaded to “Basic Information-Upload Passport First Page” together with your scanned copy of passport as a zip file.

 

VIII.   Disclaimer

1. Incomplete or unqualified application materials will not be processed.

2. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.

3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with TJU on time should inform us about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be canceled.

4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who do not pass the admission physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.
