1. Introduction

First grade Chemistry discipline belongs to the Department of Chemistry of Tianjin University. The first-grade doctoral program and post-doctoral research station of chemistry were authorized in 2005 and 2007, respectively. It was rated as one of the Municipal Key Disciplines of Tianjin in 2012. The first-grade chemistry discipline obtains the financial support from the National Natural Science Foundation and Foundations of ministries and commissions every year. Moreover, it is also funded by the native and foreign companies due to its strong relationship with the application in industry.

Every year the members belonging to this discipline can publish many high-impact articles in the well-known international journals, such as Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem. Rev., Chem. Commun., Chem. Sci..

The main directions in the chemistry include:

1 Green organic synthesis;

2 Organometallic chemistry;

3 Chiral synthesis;

4 Industrial organic catalysis;

5. New energy chemistry and technology;

6. Catalysis and surface chemistry;

7 Nanochemistry;

8. Supramolecular Chemistry;

9. Synthesis, characterization and property of fine polymer materials;

10. Coordination chemistry;

11. The functional modification of natural polymers;

12. Functional Material Chemistry.

 

2. Objective

The objective is cultivating high-level creative talents on teaching and scientific research, who have both solid and broad theoretical knowledge and strong practical ability. The PhD candidates not only can independently, creatively engage in scientific research, but also has the ability to take charge a large-scale scientific research and technology development projects, with good scientific ethics and professionalism.

 

3. Features

This program emphasizes on central courses in parallel with frontier studies. The compulsory courses focus on learning basic courses so that students have a solid, theoretical foundation in chemistry. The elective courses will be introduced by a number of PhD advisors with overseas experiences, focusing on how to deal with chemistry problems emerging from many fields in order to improve students’ research capabilities.

The program focuses on both knowledge teaching and interest training through combining course learning with lab training. There are a number of research teams in School of science. The main courses are given by various professors with a wealth of research experience and fruitful research achievement, who can provide more real cases in the class for improving the learning efficiency of students. In addition, there are many research fields in chemistry of Tianjin University, which can provide more opportunities for students to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge and might yield some cross-frontier investigations.

 

4. Duration

The basic duration of this PhD program is 3-4 years, which includes 0.5-1 year to have courses.

 

5. Courses and Credits

Student must complete a total of no less than 16 credit points, in which at least 6 cpts are degree courses, at least 3 cpts compulsory courses, and at least 7 cpts electives.

 6. Dissertation

Students are required to finish a master degree dissertation, as well as thesis publication.
