Brief Introduction to the Subject

Mechanical Engineering includes thermal and power, mechanical design and other engineering subjects. Based on nature science, technology and practical experience, Mechanical Engineering solves the theoretical and practical problems involved in the research, development, design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance for all different kinds of mechanical devices.

The Master Program in Mechanical Engineering is offered based on the three major first-level disciplines (Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechanics) in the School of Mechanical Engineering of Tianjin University. It includes three options:

Energy and Power Option: To develop scientific and humanistic quality and professional competence, and to prepare students to master the professional knowledge in thermal engineering, power engineering, power machinery, environmental engineering and other related areas, to know internal combustion engine, fuel cell, solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen energy and other energy technologies, and to have strategic vision in sustainable energy development.

Mechanical Design Option: To develop scientific and humanistic quality and professional competence, and to prepare students to master the professional knowledge in mechanical design, manufacturing, automation, mechatronics engineering and other related areas, and to know the technologies and management skills in design and manufacturing of machinery and equipment, detection and control, use and maintenance and other related areas.

Mechanics Option: Based on the subject advantages. In the purpose of nurturing high quality creative and outstanding talent. Emphasizing the combination of the theoretical, scientific and engineering computing and practical ability. Emphasizing the combination of the mechanical basis researches and national key projects. Emphasizing the combination of the scientific spirit, features research and innovation cultivating. Carrying out active educational reform. Four training directions are set: fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, general and fundamental mechanics, and engineering mechanics. To develop scientific and humanistic quality and professional competence, and to prepare students to master the professional knowledge in mechanics, mathematics, experiment and other related areas, to be able to solve theoretical and practical problems involving mechanics independently, and to have the fundamental knowledge required in research, development and management.

The School of Mechanical Engineering in Tianjin University has a complete English course system for master students. All the instructors have overseas experiences and great skills in English communications. Each course has 2-4 instructors to ensure that all the courses are available for students all the time. This English course system will ensure the success of the Master Program in Mechanical Engineering.

The students will be able to choose one of the three options in Energy and Power, Mechanical Design, and Mechanics. The three options are strongly related. By completing the required courses in the selected option, the students are allowed to take the other courses in another two options. This will be beneficial for students to broaden their horizons and knowledge.

To have practical, realistic, and scientific attitude, and to generate proper, meticulous, and honest academic atmosphere; to connect theory with practice; to be good at intensive and creative study, and team work spirit. To thoroughly learn fundamental theories, systemic professional knowledge and techniques of Mechanical Engineering; To completely understand current situation and future trend of the subject and the newest development of relevant research fields; To have capability to do independent and creative researches, and effectively solve engineering practical problems.

 

Educational System and Duration

The tutor-responsible system is adopted in student education. The number of school years for a master student to complete the degree is 4, including classes taking and at least 1 year for thesis studying.

 

Credit and Curriculum

A master student must take at least 30 credits of courses, including at least 8 credits of major-related degree courses, 8 major-related optional courses and 4 credits of compulsory degree courses.

Thesis-writing

The topic of the dissertation could be derived from the application of projects or practical problems, which will reflect professional background and have application value. Topic selection generally should be confirmed in the second to the third semester. The thesis must be completed independently under tutors’ guidance.

Confidentiality and management of a dissertation of an academic degree are executed according to the regulation of confidentiality and management of a dissertation of a graduate student in Tianjin University and School of Mechanical Engineering.
